Just over a year ago, Amelia gave powerlifting a go, and has never looked back.
After a whirlwind of training, she competed in her first British Championships in February 2016 and placed 2nd. It wasn’t until a few months after this, that she realised she had a real talent for the sport – alongside the passion needed to succeed.
Speaking about how she stays focused on improving her best, Amelia says:
“I’m always motivated because I enjoy it so much – it’s hard not to be motivated. As an individual sport, you’re constantly trying to beat your personal best and the achievement is all yours. You always know exactly what you’re aiming for and how to achieve it.”
And the motivation is definitely paying off for Amelia. She currently holds 4 British records and recently competed at the European Championships, winning a silver medal in her deadlift.
As a shy child, Amelia has gained so much more than athletic prowess from the sport. She has gained a new social group who she enjoys spending time with, and is now a confident, powerful woman. On the impact that competition has had on her personal life, Amelia says:
“Trying something has give
n me a lot of confidence. Going out on stage and having people watching and supporting is a wonderful feeling. I have made friends through sports who are the nicest bunch of people you’ve ever met. No matter what, you never hear a negative comment, just lots of friendship and positive feedback.”
Following her success at the European Competition, Amelia is now waiting to find out if she has been selected for the Worlds Championships later in the year. She has the following message for anyone thinking of trying a new sport:
“It doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like, you can do it and you can get better with practice.”
